An overdue toast to Baltimore's Glass
"For me, the Concerto for Saxophone Quartet proved even more memorable. The 1995 work finds Glass in both lyrical and jazzy moods, with an extra freshness in the thematic ideas and rhythmic playfulness. It's a good example of how Glass has expanded his reach as a composer, while never really leaving familiar ground.
Alsop again assured a taut, clean performance from the orchestra, enabling the solo group -- the Capitol Quartet -- to shine all the more. Sax players Anjan Shah, Marty Nau, David Lewis and David Stambler revealed not just superb technical control, but a seamless blend and exceptional wealth of character in their phrasing. The Capitol Quartet sounded, in a word, capital."
